What will the future of work look like five years from now? 10? 15? And more importantly, how can we prepare today’s students to be ready for it? It’s a question Shaina Wright ’08 has spent the last several years researching, and it’s work that’s led to her new role as a strategy program manager in People Operations at Google. Future of Work Disruption lies ahead. Driven by accelerating connectivity, new talent models, and cognitive tools, work is changing. As robotics, AI, the gig economy and crowds grow, jobs are being reinvented, creating the “augmented workforce.” We must reconsider how jobs are designed and work to adapt and learn for future growth. The opportunity: Making the future of work more valuable and meaningful. Shifts in work, the workforce, and the workplace are deeply interrelated. Changes in one dimension can have important consequences for both workers and employers that have not had to be considered before. What the future of work ultimately looks like isn’t a foregone The world of work is in a state of flux, which is causing considerable anxiety—and with good reason. There is growing polarization of labor-market opportunities between high- and low-skill jobs, unemployment and underemployment especially among young people, stagnating incomes for a large proportion of households, and income inequality.
